HISTORY, GOALS AND VISION

Reports of refugees drowning in the Mediterranean, news coverage of migrants walking along Danish motorways, and dramatic images of people being evacuated from Kabul Airport. Migration is a current issue, but it is not a new story.

As the only museum in Denmark with a primary focus on documenting and communicating the cultural history of immigration, the Migration Museum of Denmark tells the story from the Dutch settlers on Amager in the 16th century to Ukrainian refugees in 2022. In this way, the Migration Museum of Denmark places a current issue in a historical perspective, with people and their personal stories at its centre.

The museum first opened its doors to curious visitors in January 2012 following an inauguration ceremony with speeches by the Mayor of Furesø, Ole Bondo Christensen, and the then Minister for Gender Equality, Ecclesiastical Affairs and Nordic Cooperation, Manu Sareen. Today, we are working towards a new and larger museum that can give immigration the place it deserves in our shared Danish history.
